“What’s it like to work for Verity Credit Union”?
After six months on the job my friends are starting to ask. I was self-employed for the last eleven years so it’s a reasonable question. And anyone who knows me knows that building a business had been my life’s dream since college. So working for someone else? It was going to be a big change. Or so I thought.
One of the reasons I valued self-employment was my ability to empower people through financial education. I wanted to show people who felt like they’d reached the end of their financial rope that there were options they hadn’t considered. I liked making financial education presentations for a good cause. I guess you’d say that overall, I wanted to help people.
One of the things that surprised me most about working at Verity is that it’s a lot like my dream of business ownership – only better. It’s better because I’m working with an entire team of people doing the same thing.
From day one I’ve been empowered by this team’s knowledge. By a bright, welcoming, and funny array of colleagues that helped me get up and running as quickly as possible. It was amazing! Right away it became clear that our culture is about helping and serving. Not only our membership and the communities in which we’re located – which is true, to be sure – but one another, too.
When I sit down at my desk each day the first question I get to ask myself is, ‘How can I help this member’? Some days it’s figuring out how to pay down debt and refinance a high rate credit card. On others it’s strategizing to save for a down payment on the dream home. But it goes beyond that.
We’re out in our communities. One afternoon might find our staff volunteering at a senior center. A Saturday morning will find another volunteering at a food bank. During evenings you could find another employee offering accounting services to a local school without an accountant. And other nights we’ve got people on arts councils and committees helping to plan community events for youth and adults alike.
So what’s it like to work for Verity Credit Union? It’s about working with a team of good people helping our members create the lives they want while making our communities stronger. Having the opportunity to do this with a team of people, rather than go it alone? I honestly have to say I’m living my new professional dream.
My name is Alicia Diefenbach and I’m a Community Relations Specialist at Verity Credit Union. I absolutely love my role at Verity! I have the opportunity to explore the communities in which we’re located, reach out to organizations and individuals making these places dynamic, inviting places to live, and get involved with activities that support their well-being.
In my spare time I dote on my vegetable garden. It still never ceases to amaze me that I can create my dinner out of dirt, some seeds, and cooperative weather. I love my dog, Frank. Also, I go to rock shows. A whole lotta rock shows.
