May you be Merry

Lights of red and green, white and blue twinkle in the night. Scents of pine and cinnamon abound.
Parents swamped by mangled wrapping paper, twisted tape, and empty egg nog cartons slump in the night.

Sugared children sprint through houses knocking over Santa figurines, nut crackers, and stuffed snowmen.

Joyful dogs tilt their heads upward to catch scraps of cookies, hams, turkeys, and rolls.

Tinny carols pipe through gritty speakers as harried salespeople ring up disheveled shoppers.

Teenagers in Santa hats ring bells as passerby drop silver coins into their red buckets.

All for the joyful quiet and stillness that comes on Christmas morning.

When dreams come true, hearts fill with love, and kindness reigns for a few short hours.

When expectations are shattered, loved ones snap, and Uncle Charlie drinks too much.

Happy holidays.

May you let go of the lumps of coal and find humor and joy on this bright day.
