A few months ago I went to a party at a friend’s house. A number of his co-workers were there in addition to other non-work friends. For the most part it was a case of “never the twain shall meet,” but after mingling around on my side of the room for awhile I ventured over to meet some of his co-workers.

It was only a few moments before I regretted that decision.

The conversation was mostly “shop talk,” as was to be expected, but of the kind I have not experienced since working retail in my 20’s.

There was a lot of whining, a lot of complaining and a lot of vitriol-spewing about their customers and co-workers. I felt kind of unclean just standing there listening to it all.

As I plotted my escape I made a mental note of gratitude that I no longer work in an environment like that; even better that Verity is the veritable (!) opposite of that.

A few weeks later I had the following exchange with a co-worker:

CO-WORKER: “You know I don’t think I’ve met anyone at Verity that I don’t genuinely like.”

ME: “I know!”

A month or so later I had the same conversation with another co-worker, almost word for word.

And that got me wondering…..do only great people work at Verity or does working at Verity make people great? (It’s kind of our own version of the chicken and the egg….)

Having given it some thought over the past few weeks I would have to say the answer is BOTH.

Verity attracts people who want to work in an environment that is positive, up-beat and cooperative because the people who work at Verity – past and present – have decided that this is the kind of company we want to be. And we make that decision every day by how we treat – and how we talk about – our members, our co-workers and ourselves.

Verity is a great place to work and a great place to be a member because we have decided it will be so and we bring that attitude with us to work each and every day.

Which makes what I am about to say next particularly bittersweet….

This will most likely be the last blog post I write for Verity Voices. I will no longer be working here as of the end of July. This was such a hard decision for me, but one made necessary by family circumstances. I am so sad to be leaving, but so happy to have had the experience of working here and to know that I will always be a Verity member and that I will see all of you again.

Thanks to all of you for being WHO you are and HOW you are. It’s the Veritude (the Verity attitude) you bring every day that makes this such a fabulous place to work! I will miss you all.
