People, Perceptions, and Pizza
Astute alliterations are awesome!
There’s been a lot of discussion on what makes a great place to work. My colleague Terrell has even written about it. Oh, by the way…Verity was a finalist in no less than 10 categories of NWjobs 2007 People’s Picks awards.
It’s a great accomplishment, because this is recognition determined solely by the number of votes employees cast. No other company placed in so many categories. Granted, that makes it a glorified popularity contest, but what’s wrong with that? If employees feel like their company is a great place to work, there is little point arguing to the contrary. Perception creates reality. Here’s our rankings:
Best Small Company – 3rd Place
Best Nonprofit – 3rd Place
Best Office Party – 2nd Place
Best Benefits – 7th Place
Most Unusual Perk – 4th Place
Coolest Office Space – 7th Place
Most Eco-Friendly – 5th Place
Most Family Friendly – 4th Place
Most Laid-Back Atmosphere – 6th Place
Most Pet Friendly – 4th Place
Nevertheless, I feel a little restless. What is it going to take to make us a chart-topping best place to work? I’m committed…just give me answers. There are so many philosophies; and numerous success stories that either reinforce or completely contradict established ideologies. Companies can argue for or against the idea that salary determines everything, or that medical insurance is the ultimate decider. You can just as easily convince people that playing video games on paper is a worth-while venture. (That’s for you, Justin.)
As I sit here at my desk, the day after Thanksgiving, full of pizza bought by our company, (thanks Bill!) and enjoying a casual jeans day, my mind wanders in thinking about Verity’s strategy and goals for 2008. Perhaps the greatest fulfillment one receives in work is not the accomplishment of an objective, but the anticipation of bigger and better things. …Yes, I’m unashamed in my optimism.
And if anyone has The Answers, I’m all ears. Stop on by – we’ll probably have plenty of leftover pizza.
